    Study Notes

    Recruitment, Training, Confirmation and Re-employment

    • Probationers of nine organized Railway services (Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Stores Service, Signal Engineers, Traffic Service, Personnel Service, Accounts Services, and Medical Service) undergo training on-line and at various Railway Institutes for the first two years. Medical Service probationers' training is 3 months.

    Training of Probationers

    • 3 days: Probationers stay at the Central Hospital of the zone under the Chief Hospital Superintendent/Central Hospital.
    • 45 days: Probationers work at the Headquarters Hospital or a large Divisional Hospital in Clinical Ward/OT duties. This includes individual case management under senior doctors and regular OPD sessions. Administrative training is also included.
    • 10 days: Health Unit work (outside headquarters) for curative, preventive, and promotional health care. Training is under the supervision of the Medical Officer in charge. Administration training is also included.
    • 2 days: Detailed assessment of probationary officers' adequacy to independently hold charge at the CAO's office.
    • One month: Orientation course at the Railway Staff College, Vadodara, if available.

    Monitoring/Coordination of Probationary Training

    • Various Railway services have centrally coordinated/monitored training programs through different Institutes and Railway bodies. Specific services have their assigned monitoring bodies.

    Schedules of Probationary Training

    • Probationers (excluding Medical Service) complete a two-year probationary training program as per the schedules laid down by the Railway Board periodically.

    Probationary Training Diary

    • Probationers maintain a diary documenting their daily activities for the two years of probationary training, periodically checked by the Training Director.

    Confirmation After Probationary Training

    • No probationer is confirmed in a junior scale unless the probationary training is successfully completed and all prescribed examinations are passed.

    Determination of Seniority

    • Group 'A' probationers' performance during training and on-duty assignment determines their seniority. The Ministry of Railways sets maximum marks for distinct training items and on-duty performance. Seniority is based on these marks and perhaps, UPSC competition scores for Special Class Railway Apprentices.

    Passing Institutional or Departmental Examinations

    • Probationers are generally granted one chance to pass institutional examinations, but a second chance may be given in certain circumstances, such as illness (within three months).
    • Re-examination in failed subjects is permitted in some cases.
