Reading and Writing Module (1)
- A discourse is a continuous stretch of spoken or written language, larger than a single sentence, conveying a message or idea. It has coherence (connectedness), cohesion (unity), and organization (structured ideas). Its purpose can be to inform, persuade, or entertain.
- Two main types of discourse:
- Argumentation: Aims to persuade the listener of the speaker's accuracy.
- Narration: Creates a story or narrative, often emotionally driven, to support the story's impact.
- Information organization (knowledge organization): A method to arrange and classify data, such as by listing, labeling, categorizing, or describing.
- Organizing information for writing:
- Chronological order
- Order of importance
- Spatial order
- Comparison and contrast
- Brainstorming: A tool to generate creative solutions or explore new ideas. It's a list of ideas written down during a session.
- Brainstorming tips: Write down everything, even if it seems impractical or silly at first.
