Flashcards

Arterial Cannulation

A method used to measure blood pressure in rabbits. A cannula is inserted into the left common carotid artery and connected to a transducer.

Ductus Venosus Insertion

A technique used to measure central venous pressure (CVP) in rabbits by inserting a ductus venosus into the right atrium.

Left Common Carotid Artery Isolation

A method used to surgically access the left common carotid artery for cannulation.

Arterial Clip Application

A technique used to temporarily block blood flow in the artery before cannulation.

Study Notes

Rabbit Experiment Methods and Procedures

  • Rabbit Weight: Details not provided.
  • Anesthesia: Inject 30% urethane from marginal ear vein slowly (3ml/kg).
  • Surgical Preparation: Fix rabbit on operating table, shave neck, and create a 5-7cm incision along the neck's midline.
  • Arterial Cannulation: Separate the left common carotid artery, insert an arterial cannula into it, and connect to a transducer to measure blood pressure.
  • Arterial Cannula Insertion Method: Ligate the end of the artery furthest from the heart with a silk thread. Block the end of the artery closest to the heart. Cross a thread between the knot and clip under the artery. Make an inclined cut towards the heart on the artery with ophthalmological scissors (half the artery's diameter). Insert arterial cannula into the cut, secure with a thread, avoiding slippage.
  • Venous Cannulation (ductus venosus): Cross a thread under vena jugularis externa and lift the end furthest from the heart. Make an inclined cut towards the heart with ophthalmological scissors(half the vein's diameter). Insert the ductus venosus into the cut, and lay down the thread under the vein to secure blood return.
  • Heparin Injection: Inject heparin solution into the ear vein to prevent clotting.
  • Blood Pressure Monitoring: Open the computer and monitor blood pressure.
  • Paraffin Injection: Inject liquid paraffin (0.5-1ml) into the ear vein to observe thromboembolism and the effect on blood pressure.
  • Normal Saline Injection: Inject normal saline into the heart rapidly from the ductus venosus, and observe the change in central venous pressure (CVP).
  • Post-mortem Examination: After death, open the chest cavity and observe the heart, liver, and ascites for any changes.
