Questions and Answers

What is the purpose of ligating the left common carotid artery during arterial cannulation?

  • To stabilize the position of the cannula
  • To allow for excess blood to exit the artery
  • To avoid slippage of the cannula (correct)
  • To prevent blood flow to the brain

Which technique is used to insert the ductus venosus into the right atrium?

  • Cutting the vein sharply towards the head
  • Injecting liquid paraffin before insertion
  • Crossing a thread under the vena jugularis externa (correct)
  • Applying pressure on the right atrium during insertion

What should be done after injecting heparin solution into the vein?

  • Observe the blood pressure changes immediately (correct)
  • Connect the sheath to the arterial cannula
  • Directly connect the cannula to the computer
  • Inject normal saline to the heart through the ductus venosus

Flashcards

Cervical Incision

A type of surgical opening created during an operation. In this procedure, a 5-7 cm incision is made along the midline of the neck to access internal structures.

Ligation

A common surgical method used to secure a vessel. A silk thread is tied tightly around the vessel, stopping blood flow.

Arterial Cannula

A medical device used to measure pressure in the blood vessels. In this procedure, a cannula is inserted into the common carotid artery, and the transducer measures blood pressure.

Liquid Paraffin Injection

The process of introducing liquid paraffin into a vein to simulate thromboembolism, a blockage of a blood vessel by a blood clot.

Right Vena Jugularis Externa

A type of vein located in the neck, used in this procedure to measure central venous pressure (CVP).

Central Venous Pressure (CVP)

The measured pressure within the veins, particularly in the right atrium of the heart. This is monitored to assess cardiovascular function.

Study Notes

Rabbit Experiment Methods and Procedures

  • Rabbit Weight: Measured
  • Anesthesia: Inject 30% urethane from marginal ear vein slowly (3ml/kg)
  • Preparation: Fix rabbit on operating table, shave neck fur, cut 5-7cm incision on skin along cervical midline
  • Arterial Cannulation: Separate left common carotid artery, insert arterial cannula into it, connect to transducer to measure blood pressure
  • Arterial Cannula Insertion Method:
    • Ligate left common carotid artery near head with silk thread
    • Block artery near heart with clip
    • Cross thread between knot and clip under artery
    • Use scissors to make an incision towards heart on artery (half artery diameter)
    • Insert cannula, ligate silk thread for secure cannula placement (prevent slippage)
  • Ductus Venosus Insertion:
    • Cross a thread under vena jugularis externa
    • Lift end of vena far from heart (avoid blood return)
    • Make incision towards heart on vein (half vein diameter)
    • Insert ductus venosus for 5-6cm to right atrium, ensure blood return with thread under vein
  • Heparin Injection: Inject heparin solution into vein edge of ear to prevent clotting
  • Blood Pressure Measurement: Observe blood pressure using computer and transducer
  • Paraffin Injection: Inject 0.5-1ml liquid paraffin into vein edge of ear to induce thromboembolism and observe blood pressure change
  • Normal Saline Injection: Inject normal saline into heart to determine change in central venous pressure (CVP)
  • Post-Mortem Observation: Open chest and abdomen, observe heart, liver, and ascites after death.
