    Study Notes

    • Record base: part of a denture that provides support and stability to the denture itself

    • Ideal record base characteristics: strength and rigidity, accuracy, smooth rounded borders, palate thickness (1-2mm), palate thickness and contour defined by the master cast land

    • Materials: mostly used are cold self-cure and light cure acrylic resins, baseplate wax, swaged tin, aluminum foil

    • Record base fabrication: blocking out master casts, using a red pencil, flowing wax over outlined areas, using a cloth polishing wheel, large camel’s hair brush, and a red handle knife, using a Bunsen burner and autopolymerizing acrylic resin

    • Record base polymerization: process in a pressure pot (20 psi, 110 degrees water, 10-15 minutes), or under an overturned rubber mixing bowl

    • Record base preparation: soaking the polymerized record base and casts in hot water, removing the record bases without damaging the casts, removing excess block-out wax, and modifying unfinished record bases

    • Completed record bases: consistencies in palate thickness, retromolar pad coverage, thin labial areas, roughened ridge areas, and no porosity or voids on tissue surfaces

    • Occlusion rims: occluding surfaces constructed on record bases or permanent denture bases for recording jaw relations and arranging teeth

    • Occlusion rim fabrication: using a maxillary record base, heating baseplate wax, forming the occlusal aspect, and contouring the buccal and labial aspects with a hot plate

    • Instruments and materials: baseplate wax, wax spatula, occlusal plane former (hot plate), technical procedures involve heating and forming wax and using a Bunsen burner

    • Record base functions: support and stability, accurate adaptation to the cast, and proper occlusal relationships.
