20 Questions

What are the two determinants of the occlusal plane when the wax rim is ideally contoured and mounted?

The incisal edge of the central incisor and the middle third of the retromolar pads bilaterally

What aids in developing contour of the lips and cheeks when the wax rim is contoured with the rim former?

The wax rim

What do the wax rims aid in determining for the clinician?

The proper vertical dimension of occlusion

What serves as a general aid in tooth selection?

Wax rims

In which region are anterior maxillary teeth arranged according to the labial contours developed in the patient?

$\text{Anterior maxillary}$

What is used to make centric relation records?

Wax rims

What aids in positioning anterior teeth when properly contoured in the anterior region?

Wax rim

What can serve as a guide for tooth selection based on marked distances?

Distance between marks on wax rims

What is the ideal palate thickness for a record base?

1-2mm

Which materials are mostly used for record base fabrication?

Cold self-cure and light cure acrylic resins

What is the process of record base polymerization?

In a pressure pot (20 psi, 110 degrees water, 10-15 minutes) or under an overturned rubber mixing bowl

What are the key functions of a record base?

Support and stability, accurate adaptation to the cast, and proper occlusal relationships

What are occlusion rims used for?

Recording jaw relations and arranging teeth

How are occlusion rims fabricated?

By using modeling plastic material to create the rims on a custom tray

What is the purpose of occlusion blocks in prosthetic dentistry?

To make maxillomandibular relation records and to arrange teeth

What are the requirements of a denture base?

Stable in mouth and on the stone model

What is the purpose of a record base in prosthetic dentistry?

To transfer accurate jaw relationships to an articulator

What is the main characteristic of a temporary record base?

They are discarded and replaced by denture base material once their role is complete

What are the methods of construction for record bases?

$1$. Sprinkle on method $2$. Finger adapted dough method $3$. Flasking method $4$. Wax confined method

What is the purpose of a denture base in prosthetic dentistry?

$1$. To provide support for artificial teeth $2$. To restore function and aesthetics $3$. To maintain oral health and hygiene $4$. To adjust occlusion and jaw relationships

Study Notes

  • Record base: part of a denture that provides support and stability to the denture itself
  • Ideal record base characteristics: strength and rigidity, accuracy, smooth rounded borders, palate thickness (1-2mm), palate thickness and contour defined by the master cast land
  • Materials: mostly used are cold self-cure and light cure acrylic resins, baseplate wax, swaged tin, aluminum foil
  • Record base fabrication: blocking out master casts, using a red pencil, flowing wax over outlined areas, using a cloth polishing wheel, large camel’s hair brush, and a red handle knife, using a Bunsen burner and autopolymerizing acrylic resin
  • Record base polymerization: process in a pressure pot (20 psi, 110 degrees water, 10-15 minutes), or under an overturned rubber mixing bowl
  • Record base preparation: soaking the polymerized record base and casts in hot water, removing the record bases without damaging the casts, removing excess block-out wax, and modifying unfinished record bases
  • Completed record bases: consistencies in palate thickness, retromolar pad coverage, thin labial areas, roughened ridge areas, and no porosity or voids on tissue surfaces
  • Occlusion rims: occluding surfaces constructed on record bases or permanent denture bases for recording jaw relations and arranging teeth
  • Occlusion rim fabrication: using a maxillary record base, heating baseplate wax, forming the occlusal aspect, and contouring the buccal and labial aspects with a hot plate
  • Instruments and materials: baseplate wax, wax spatula, occlusal plane former (hot plate), technical procedures involve heating and forming wax and using a Bunsen burner
  • Record base functions: support and stability, accurate adaptation to the cast, and proper occlusal relationships.

Test your knowledge on the fabrication of record base and wax rim in prosthetic dentistry. Topics include occlusion blocks, denture bases, and maxillomandibular relation records.
