How can you identify a deactivated track?

A deactivated track is visually different in Pro Tools. In the Edit and Mix windows, it appears darker, and the track name is italicized in the Tracks List, Edit window, and Mix window.

What is a sample-based track?

Sample-based tracks in Pro Tools have all their elements, such as clips and automation, tied to a specific, absolute position on the timeline. This means changes in tempo do not affect the track's content.

Signup and view all the flashcards

What is a tick-based track?

Tick-based tracks are based on a relative time system, where elements are tied to ticks rather than absolute positions. Therefore, changes in tempo will affect the positions of elements on the track.

How can you identify a sample-based track in Pro Tools?

You can identify a sample-based track in Pro Tools by a blue clock icon displayed in the track's Timebase Selector.

What is an advantage of using tick-based tracks?

Tick-based tracks are more flexible than sample-based tracks because their elements adjust to changes in tempo. This can be useful for creating musical arrangements that respond to tempo changes.

Signup and view all the flashcards

How does tempo affect tick-based tracks?

Tempo changes affect the positions of elements on a tick-based track due to the relationship between ticks and tempo. Elements will move forward or backward on the track depending on the tempo change.

By default, audio tracks, auxiliary input tracks, master fader, VCA, routing folder, and video tracks are all sample-based in Pro Tools.

Signup and view all the flashcards

How do tempo changes affect clips on a tick-based track?

When a track is tick-based, the clip's beginning is anchored to a specific tick location. This means that changing the tempo will not simply move the clip forward or backward in time, but will also affect the clip's duration, making it longer or shorter depending on the tempo change.

Signup and view all the flashcards

How do tempo changes affect clips on a sample-based track?

When a track is sample-based, the clip's beginning is anchored to a specific time point in real time, unaffected by tempo changes. Changing the tempo will simply move the clip forward or backward without affecting its duration.

Signup and view all the flashcards

Why do tempo changes affect MIDI notes' duration?

Changing the tempo of a track will affect not only the start time but also the duration of notes played on a MIDI track because MIDI note start and end positions are separate events that respond to tempo changes.

Signup and view all the flashcards

How do tempo changes affect audio clips?

Tempo changes do not affect the duration of audio clips unless Elastic Audio is applied. Elastic Audio is a feature that allows for tempo changes to stretch or compress audio while preserving its pitch.

What happens when a MIDI or Instrument track is set to sample-based?

When a MIDI or Instrument track is set to sample-based, tempo changes will no longer affect their note start and end positions. This makes them behave like audio and stay fixed in time regardless of tempo changes.

How do tempo changes affect tick-based audio clips?

When you change the tempo of a track with tick-based audio, the clip boundaries will shift based on the tick location, which ensures that the audio follows the tempo changes.

Signup and view all the flashcards

Why is tick-based audio useful for music production?

Tick-based audio offers more flexibility for working with tempo changes in music production. It allows you to create more precisely timed audio loops that reliably adjust to tempo changes. However, you need to ensure that the clip boundaries align correctly with the desired tempo changes.

Signup and view all the flashcards

What is Elastic Audio?

Elastic Audio is a feature that allows for stretching or compressing audio clips without altering pitch, ensuring that the audio follows tempo changes while maintaining a consistent pitch.

How does track timebase affect automation?

Automation in Pro Tools is also affected by track timebases. Tick-based tracks respond directly to tempo changes, while sample-based tracks remain unaffected. This can be utilized for precise timing of automation parameters, ensuring they align with the tempo of the music.

What happens if you have a timebase mismatch?

If you have a track that is sample-based and the rest of your session is tick-based, you might run into problems when you change the tempo. This is because the audio on the sample-based track will not shift with the tempo changes, while the other tracks will.

  • Manual inactive tracks remain inactive when moved into active folders.
  • A folder's activity status changes tracks inside the folder to match the parent folder's activity(inactive or not).

Track Timebases

  • Sample-based tracks: Clips & automation locked to a fixed timeline position (unchanged by tempo) (blue clock).
  • Tick-based tracks: Clips & automation relative to the session's tempo (tempo changes affect position) (green metronome).
  • Default track types & their timebases.
    • Audio, Aux, Master, VCA, Routing Folders, & Video tracks are sample-based.
    • MIDI and Instrument tracks are tick-based by default.
  • Basic folders have no timebase.
  • Users can change track timebases.

Track Timebase Workflows

  • Tick-based audio: Separate each drum hit as a separate clip, audio will follow tempo changes.
  • Sample-based MIDI: Change MIDI tracks/instruments to sample-based for video synchronization.
  • Timebases & Automation: Automation on sample-based tracks won't follow tempo changes on related tick-based tracks. Both need to be tick-based to change with tempo.

Track Defaults

  • Changing New Track Defaults to Tick-Based: Pro Tools defaults to sample-based but can be changed to tick-based in preferences.

Other Information

  • Folder Tracks and Track Colors: Folder colors are visually distinct for Basic and Routing Folders. Colors of tracks INSIDE folders are also displayed in color to help visualize. Nesting of folders can be expressed and visualized via color and lines indicating hierarchical relationships.
  • Adding New Tracks: Double-clicking empty spaces in the tracks list creates a new track of the same type as the last track created. Holding modifier keys during double-click creates tracks of specific types (Audio, Aux., Instrument, and others). Instrument tracks are always stereo when created via double-click method.
  • Batch Renaming Presets and Settings: Save/recall preset settings and Batch Track Rename setting files. Enabling the 'Link Track and Edit Selection' button ensures selection will place edit cursors so shortcuts (Shift+S, M, F) will work.
  • Track Timebases: MIDI data, for music production, often benefits from being tick-based to follow the tempo. Changing to sample-based MIDI tracks/instruments is appropriate for audio-visual synchronization.
  • Tick-Based Audio (Drums), Separation of Clip: To have drum loops that change speed based on tempo without making the track stretched or compressed, use "separate clip at transients". Select desired clips, use the menu item to separate by transient (this will split long clip boundaries into numerous, shorter ones), and then the track will follow tempo changes.
  • Timebases and Automation: Sample-based automation will not change with tick-based tracks. Use tick-based tracks for both elements to sync.
