- MELCS: Explain the forms and functions of state and non-state institutions.

- Nation: imagined and abstract entity; existence as state of mind, common history and identity are primary. The material expression of residence in a physical territory is less important
- State: highest form of political organization; a political unit with a government that has sovereignty over people and a defined territory; often associated with a nation
- Concept of authority and legitimacy explored: authority is the right to command, legitimacy in a formal manner makes authority binding and worthy of obedience.
- Non-state institutions are defined: groups and organizations outside the influence of any state or government; often collaborating with the government but are independent
- Examples of non-state institutions explored: bank, corporations, cooperatives, trade unions, transnational advocacy groups, global organizations, and international organizations
