Study Notes
Pituitary Gland
- The pituitary gland is a rounded, pea-shaped gland, approximately 1.3 cm (0.5 in) in diameter.
- It is covered by the dura mater and supported by the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone.
- The gland is highly vascular and surrounded by the cerebral arterial circle, providing a rich blood supply.
- The pituitary gland has two lobes, each about 5 cm long, positioned on either lateral side of the trachea and connected anteriorly by the isthmus.
- The follicular cells of the pituitary gland synthesize the two principal thyroid hormones.
Innervation of the Thyroid
- The thyroid gland is innervated by postganglionic neurons from the superior and middle cervical sympathetic ganglia.
- It is also innervated by preganglionic neurons from ganglia derived from the second through the seventh thoracic segment of the spinal cord.
Adrenal Glands
- The adrenal glands are highly vascular.
This quiz covers the anatomy and structure of the pituitary gland, including its size, shape, and location in the brain.
