Endocrine Glands
- Endocrine glands produce and release hormones directly into the bloodstream.
Types of Endocrine Glands
- Pineal Gland: A tiny gland in the brain, beneath the corpus callosum, that produces and releases the hormone melatonin.
Pituitary Gland
- Located at the base of the brain, below the hypothalamus.
- Releases eight hormones, some of which trigger other endocrine glands to release hormones.
Thyroid Gland
- A small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck, under the skin.
- Releases hormones that help control metabolism.
Parathyroid Glands
- Four pea-sized glands, typically behind the thyroid gland.
- Sometimes located along the esophagus or in the chest.
- Release parathyroid hormone (PTH), which controls the level of calcium in the blood.
