Study Notes
Head Protection
- Protect from head impacts and falling objects
- Use helmet or hard hat
Eye Protection
- Protect from chemical splashes, dust, gases, and vapors
- Use visors, face shields, goggles, or safety spectacles
Ear Protection
- Protect from excessive noise
- Use earmuffs or earplugs
Mouth Protection
- Protect from dust, vapor, and gases
- Use dust mask for nuisance dusts
- Use respirators for protection from gas and vapors
- Use air-fed helmet for higher levels of contamination
Hand and Arm Protection
- Protect from cuts, chemical exposure, contamination, and disease transmission
- Use various types of gloves with a material that prevents chemicals from passing through
Feet and Leg Protection
- Protect from slips, falling objects, chemical splashes, and cuts
- Use safety boots with protective toecaps and chemical resistant over shoes
Body Protection
- Protect from contaminated dust, chemical splashes, and adverse weather
- Use disposable overalls, boiler suits, hi-vis clothing, fire resistant clothing, lab coats, and bakers whites
Hearing Protection
- Last resort to protect from noise
- Use only after other measures to reduce noise have been exhausted
- The employer must inform the employee about steps taken to reduce noise
- Employer must provide and train in the use of hearing protection equipment
- This equipment should reduce noise exposure to less than 87 dB(A)
Hearing Protection Zones
- Employers should designate "Hearing Protection Zones" in areas with high noise levels
- The zones should be labeled "Ear Protection Zone" and include signage requiring hearing protection
- Employees are obligated to wear hearing protection equipment in these zones
- Employees who are regularly exposed to noise levels at or above the second action value must be included in a health surveillance program
Hearing Protection Limits
- Exposure limit that must not be exceeded: 87 dB(A) - daily or weekly
Controlling Exposure to Hazards (Hierarchy of Controls)
- Eliminate or substitute more toxic materials with less toxic ones
- Isolate people from the hazard
- Work practices and administrative controls (changing the way of working)
- Use individual protection from the hazard
Engineering Controls
- Achieved by isolating or enclosing the process or operation from workers
- Example: a physical barrier separating workers from chemicals
- Another alternative: local exhaust ventilation which removes contaminated air directly at the source
- Example: use fume hoods to remove dusts/fumes at the source
Limitations of PPE
- PPE does not reduce or eliminate the hazard
- Only protects the wearer, not others in the vicinity of the hazard
- PPE could be unreliable and leaving the individual unprotected if it fails
- Gives a false sense of security about the level of protection
- More than one type of PPE will be required due to varying sizes and sensitivities
Employers Duties
- Ensure suitable PPE is provided to all employees exposed to risks to their health and safety
- Conduct an assessment to ensure the PPE offers adequate protection for its intended use before use
- Maintain PPE, ensuring that it is in working order and good repair
- Inspect and test PPE frequently and repair any defects
- Provide replacement PPE
- Ensure that PPE is properly stored when not in use
- Provide adequate training to employees about the risks associated with the chemical they are being protected from
- Provide training on the proper use, maintenance, and limitations of PPE
- Keep a training record of all trainings provided
- Review training periodically
Employees Duties
- Use the PPE provided according to training and instructions received
- Store the PPE when not in use
- Report any defects in PPE
- Do not intentionally misuse or abuse PPE
Exposure Action Values
- Risks should be reduce to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) using:
- Engineering controls
- Administrative controls
- Use of hearing protection equipment
Employers Responsibilities
- Know the hazards
- Provide a safe work environment for employees
Employees Responsibilities
- Use the PPE provided
- Care for the equipment provided
Work Practice and Administrative Controls
- Introduce changes to the process to minimize contact with hazards
- Rotate job assignments and work schedules
- Minimize the number of employees exposed and reduce the duration of exposure
- Use PPE as a last resort when other measures cannot adequately control the hazard
