About the Qualification

• Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in German is a linear qualification, with all units assessed at the end of the course.

How the Qualification is Assessed

• The listening examination (Paper 1) is 30 minutes long and worth 25% of the qualification. It consists of seven tasks, each based on a single recorded text.
• The combined reading and writing examination (Paper 2) lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and is worth 50% of the qualification. It is divided into two sections: reading and writing and grammar.
• The speaking examination (Paper 3) is an individual assessment lasting 8-10 minutes and worth 25% of the qualification. It is graded on three tasks.

Speaking Exam Details

• The speaking examination must conducted entirely in German and must be in one continuous session.
• During the speaking examination students must complete three tasks in consecutive order.
• The examiner randomly selects a discussion topic for Task B using a grid provided three days in advance of the examination.
• The examiner also randomly selects a discussion topic for Task C from the same grid.
• Students may not bring notes into the examination, but are allowed to bring their picture for Task A.

Content Topics

• Five main topic areas are covered: Home and Abroad, Education and Employment, Personal Life and Relationships, The World Around Us, and Further Exploration.
• The content is designed to be culturally sensitive using authentic texts.
• The assessment criteria are based on the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), aiming to reach Levels A2 and B1.
