Study Notes
Packed Cell Volume (PCV) Lab 4
- PCV is the relative percentage of red blood cells in a given volume of whole blood
- Used to diagnose anemia (low red blood cells) and polycythemia (high red blood cells)
- Part of a complete blood count (CBC)
Materials
- Good blood sample
- Hematocrit capillary tube
- Sealing material (e.g., clay)
- Micro centrifuge
- Hematocrit reader
- Sterile lancet
Procedure
- Clean finger with spirit, use sterile lancet for deep prick
- Fill capillary tube with blood to ¾ its length
- Seal the tube cap
- Centrifuge for 4-5 minutes at 11,000 rpm
- Determine PCV using hematocrit reader
Normal Values
- Adult females: 37-47%
- Adult males: 42-52%
- Children: 36-44%
Increased PCV
- Polycythemia
- Dehydration
- Lung disease
- Some heart diseases
Decreased PCV
- Pregnancy
- Anemia
- Low iron levels
- Kidney diseases
