Oxygen Therapy
- Oxygen therapy is the delivery of oxygen to the body tissues and cells for medical intervention.
- It is used to treat various conditions, including hypoxia, hypoventilation, and hypoxemia.
Indications for Oxygen Therapy
- Hypoxia: when the body tissues are deprived of adequate oxygen supply.
- Hypoventilation: inadequate ventilation of the lungs.
- Hypoxemia: low level of oxygen in the blood.
- Cyanosis: bluish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, or nail beds.
Oxygen Delivery Systems
- The choice of oxygen delivery system depends on the client's oxygen needs and comfort.
- Types of oxygen delivery systems:
- Cannula (nasal cannula): flow rate 2-6 L/min.
- Facemask: simple face mask, flow rate 5-8 L/min.
- Partial rebreather mask: flow rate 6-10 L/min.
- Non-rebreather mask: flow rate 10-15 L/min.
Artificial Airways
- Artificial airways are used to maintain a patent airway passage for clients whose airway has become obstructed.
- Types of artificial airways:
- Oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway: used to keep upper air passage open when they may become obstructed by secretion or tongue.
- Endotracheal tube: used for clients who have general anesthesia or require mechanical ventilation.
- Tracheostomy: an opening into the trachea through the neck, used for clients who need long-term airway support.
