RPA Types

There are two main types of Robotic Process Automation (RPA): attended and unattended. Attended RPA works alongside employees, while unattended RPA operates autonomously, performing tasks without human intervention.

When to Automate?

To determine if a process is suitable for RPA, there are four key criteria: rule-based, repetitive, defined inputs/outputs, and sufficient volume.

Study Notes

Processes & Organizations

  • A process is a way people organize activities and achieve goals.
  • Two dimensions of process quality are efficiency (outputs to inputs) and effectiveness (how well goals are met).
  • Processes can be improved by changing the structure, resources, or both.
  • Structured processes are standardized, formally defined, and documented. Exceptions are uncommon. Structure changes over time.
  • Dynamic processes support less structured decisions and are more fluid and informal. Exceptions are frequent. Structure changes rapidly.
  • Organizational processes range from workgroup to enterprise to inter-enterprise, with increasing scope and complexity.

Organizational Process Levels

  • Workgroup: Supports one or more workgroup processes; 10-100 users; procedures are often formalized; problem solutions are within the group, duplication is possible, and changes are relatively difficult.
  • Enterprise: Supports one or more enterprise processes; 100-1,000+ users; procedures are formalized; problem solutions impact the entire organization, workgroup data duplication is reduced, and changes are more difficult.
  • Inter-Enterprise: Supports one or more inter-enterprise processes; 1,000+ users; systems procedures are formalized; problem solutions affect multiple organizations, resolution of data duplication, and changes are very difficult.

Information Silos

  • An information silo is an isolated information system that can't communicate with other systems.
  • Problems include: duplicated data, disjointed processes, data inconsistencies, increased costs, and decreased efficiency.
  • Solutions include database integration and revised applications feeding multiple databases.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

  • CRM is a suite of applications, databases, and inherent processes to manage customer interactions throughout their lifecycle (marketing, acquisition, relationship management, and loss/churn).
  • CRM supports customer-centric organizations.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

  • ERP is a suite of applications, a database, and inherent processes to consolidate business operations into a single platform.
  • ERP's primary purpose is integration, allowing real-time updates.
  • ERP includes CRM components and modules for supply chain, manufacturing, human resources, and accounting.

Business Process Modeling

  • A business process is a set of linked tasks delivering a service or product to a client.
  • Modeling notation standardizes documentation.

IT Governance

  • Governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) manages an organization's overall governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
  • GRC supports aligning IT with business goals while managing risk and meeting compliance requirements.
  • IT governance is a subset of GRC.
  • Organizations face numerous regulations related to data protection and financial accountability impacting IT governance.

Cybersecurity Concepts

  • The goal of cybersecurity protects against threats and losses.
  • Threats involve unauthorized access to data, for example, hackers.
  • A vulnerability is an opportunity for threats to gain access to sensitive data (e.g., faulty service).
  • Safeguards protect against these threats, examples include firewalls, encryption, and IAM.
  • Sources of threats include human error, computer crime, and natural disasters.

Software Automation (RPA)

  • RPA (Robotic process automation) automates business processes through software bots/digital workers based on set rules.
  • Benefits of RPA include greater productivity, accuracy, cost savings, rapid return on investment (ROI), integration across platforms, and scalability.

E-Commerce

  • E-commerce encompasses B2C (business-to-consumer), B2B (business-to-business), and C2C (consumer-to-consumer) transactions.
  • B2C—online retailers selling products to consumers.
  • B2B—businesses buying and selling from each other.
  • C2C—consumers buy/sell in online marketplaces.

Cloud Computing

  • Cloud providers offer compute, storage, databases, and other IT resources.
  • Key advantages include agility, elasticity, and reduced costs.
  • Example services include Amazon Web Services (AWS), EC2, S3, Aurora, CloudFront, RedShift and Route 53.
