Attitudes and Job Satisfaction

  • Attitudes consist of three components: Affective (emotional attachment), Cognitive (opinion or belief), and Behavioral (behaviour towards something)
  • Attitudes predict behavior, and the relationship between attitudes and behavior is influenced by moderating factors such as importance of the attitude, correspondence to behavior, and social pressures
  • Job satisfaction is a positive feeling about one's job, resulting from an evaluation of its characteristics
  • There are four employee responses to job dissatisfaction: exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect

Job Involvement, Organizational Commitment, and Job Satisfaction

  • Job involvement is the degree of psychological identification with one's job, where perceived performance is important to self-worth
  • Organizational commitment refers to identifying with a particular organization and its goals, wishing to maintain membership in the organization
  • Organizational commitment has three dimensions: Affective (emotional attachment), Continuance Commitment (economic value of staying), and Normative (moral or ethical obligation)

Cognitive Dissonance

  • Cognitive dissonance occurs when there is an incompatibility between two or more attitudes or between behavior and attitudes
  • Individuals seek to reduce dissonance to achieve consistency, by changing attitudes, modifying behavior, or through rationalization
  • The desire to reduce dissonance depends on the importance of the elements, degree of individual influence, and rewards involved

Perceived Organizational Support

  • Perceived organizational support refers to employees' perceptions of the extent to which their organization values their contributions and cares about their well-being
  • Perceived organizational support is influenced by factors such as fair pay, job security, and managerial support for employee welfare
