Study Notes
Oral Tissue Development
- Initiation: Begins in week 6-7 with the formation of the primary epithelial band in the mandibular and maxillary prominences
-
Dental lamina: Forms by week 7
- Extends to follow the outline of the developing dental arches, forming the basis for the future teeth
- Vestibular lamina: Forms adjacent to the dental lamina, will become the vestibule which is the space between the teeth and lips
- Dental placodes: Form from the dental lamina in week 8, these are the epithelial swellings that will become individual teeth
- Basement membrane: Separates the oral epithelial cells and ectomesenchyme cells, acts as a communication barrier in the development of teeth
Tooth Development Stages
-
Bud Stage: Characterized by the formation of a round, knob-like structure from the dental placode
- Interaction between the oral epithelial cells of the dental placode and the underlying ectomesenchyme cells via the basement membrane triggers this stage
-
Cap Stage: The bud stage develops a cap shape, the enamel organ begins forming
- The enamel organ is a specialized structure responsible for enamel formation
-
Bell Stage: The cap further develops into a bell shape
- Inside the bell, the enamel organ separates from the dental lamina.
- The outline of the crown becomes visible.
- There are two parts to the Bell stage:
- Early Bell Stage: Cellular differentiation occurs in the enamel organ and dental papilla, setting the stage for tooth formation
-
Late Bell Stage: Histo-differentiation continues with further development and differentiation of cells
- This stage involves :
- Amelogenesis: The formation of enamel by ameloblasts
- Dentinogenesis: The formation of dentin by odontoblasts
- This stage involves :
Cellular Differentiation
-
Enamel Organ: The primary structure responsible for enamel formation
- Contains the following layers:
- Outer Enamel Epithelium (OEE): Cuboidal cells playing a key role in tooth eruption
- Stellate Reticulum (SR): Star-shaped cells, facilitate amelogenesis
- Stratum Intermedium (SI): Flattened layer of cells, facilitate amelogenesis
- Inner Enamel Epithelium (IEE): Tall columnar cells that differentiate into ameloblasts, the cells responsible for enamel production
- Contains the following layers:
-
Dental Papilla: Ectomesenchymal tissue that will become the pulp
- Contains the following cells:
- Odontoblasts: Cells along the periphery of the dental papilla that produce dentin
- Pulpal Cells: Located within the center of the dental papilla, will eventually become the pulp of the tooth
- Contains the following cells:
Oral Mucosa Development
- Oral Mucosa: Lining of the oral cavity
-
Oral epithelial cells: Located in the vestibular lamina and lingual regions, undergo proliferation, migration, and differentiation to form different types of mucosa.
- Different types of mucosa:
- Masticatory mucosa: Found in areas subject to chewing
- Lining mucosa: Lines the inside of the cheeks, lips, and floor of the mouth
- Specialized mucosa: Found in areas with specific functions, such as the gingiva
- Different types of mucosa:
- Ectomesenchymal cells: Underlying the epithelial cells, will form the lamina propria (connective tissue) and submucosa.
Clinical Significance
- Developmental anomalies can occur due to genetic or environmental factors during any stage of tooth development
- These anomalies can impact the shape, size, and function of the teeth
- Understanding the development of oral tissues is essential for
- Identifying healthy vs. abnormal tissues
- Diagnosing and preventing oral diseases
- Maintaining oral health through preventive care, management of diseases and healing
Timeline
-
Primary Dentition Development: Begins with the Late Bell Stage of the primary teeth.
- The Bell stage for permanent teeth forms while the baby teeth are still in the Bell stage.
- Eruption of primary teeth occurs later in the process.
