Diagnostic Criteria
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is characterized by a pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior.
- Diagnostic criteria include:
- At least 4 symptoms from any of the following categories:
- Angry/Irritable Mood:
- Loses temper
- Is easily annoyed
- Is angry and resentful
- Is spiteful and vindictive
- Argumentative/Defiant Behavior:
- Argues with adults
- Actively defies rules
- Deliberately annoys others
- Blames others for mistakes
- Angry/Irritable Mood:
- Symptoms occur frequently (at least 6 times in 6 months)
- Symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning
- Symptoms are not better explained by another mental disorder (e.g., Conduct Disorder, ADHD)
- At least 4 symptoms from any of the following categories:
Comorbidity with ADHD
- ODD is commonly comorbid with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Up to 50% of children with ADHD also meet criteria for ODD
- Comorbidity is associated with:
- Increased severity of symptoms
- Greater functional impairment
- Higher risk of developing Conduct Disorder
