Diagnostic Criteria

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is characterized by a pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior.
  • Diagnostic criteria include:
    • At least 4 symptoms from any of the following categories:
      • Angry/Irritable Mood:
        • Loses temper
        • Is easily annoyed
        • Is angry and resentful
        • Is spiteful and vindictive
      • Argumentative/Defiant Behavior:
        • Argues with adults
        • Actively defies rules
        • Deliberately annoys others
        • Blames others for mistakes
    • Symptoms occur frequently (at least 6 times in 6 months)
    • Symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning
    • Symptoms are not better explained by another mental disorder (e.g., Conduct Disorder, ADHD)

Comorbidity with ADHD

  • ODD is commonly comorbid with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Up to 50% of children with ADHD also meet criteria for ODD
  • Comorbidity is associated with:
