Gluten-Free Diet Alternatives

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
- Cleft Lip: incomplete fusion of embryonic structure surrounding the primitive oral cavity
- Cleft Palate: failure of primary and secondary plates to fuse during embryonic development
- Etiology: teratogens, inheritance, drugs, folic acid deficiency, maternal smoking, and alcoholic consumption
- Diagnostics: apparent at birth, cleft lip can be diagnosed in utero through ultrasound (14-16 weeks), palpation of the palate
- Therapeutic management: surgery (cheiloplasty and palatoplasty)
- Nursing management: feeding in an upright position, use of Haberman bottle, post-op care (avoid prone position, elbow restraints, and use of suction)
