Nursing Interventions: Assessments
- Vital signs: Monitor for changes in temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate.
- Fatigue, pallor, dizziness, shortness of breath: Assess for signs of anemia, which can result from decreased production of red blood cells (RBCs) due to leukemia.
- Excessive bruising, petechiae: Assess for signs of thrombocytopenia, which can result from decreased production of platelets due to leukemia.
- Laboratory values: Monitor CBC values for evidence of leukemic white blood cells (WBCs), which are abnormally high in number and are produced from a single mutation. Leukemic WBCs clog the bone marrow, leading to suppressed production of RBCs and platelets.
