Study Notes
Central Nervous System (CNS)
- The CNS primarily consists of the brain and spinal cord.
- The brain is protected by the skull, while the spinal cord is housed within the vertebral column.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- The PNS comprises nerves, ganglia, enteric plexuses, and sensory receptors.
- 12 pairs of cranial nerves emerge from the brain.
- 31 pairs of spinal nerves originate from the spinal cord.
- Ganglia are small masses of nervous tissue located outside the brain and spinal cord.
- Enteric plexuses are extensive networks of neurons in the walls of organs in the gastrointestinal (GI) system, regulating digestion.
- Sensory receptors are specialized nervous tissues sensitive to internal and external conditions, such as touch receptors in the skin.
