Study Notes

Nerve Supply of Lower Limb Muscles

Lumbar Plexus

  • Formed by the ventral branches of L1-L4
  • Divides into two main branches:
    • Femoral nerve (L2-L4)
    • Obturator nerve (L2-L4)

Sacral Plexus

  • Formed by the ventral branches of L4-S3
  • Divides into two main branches:
    • Tibial nerve (L4-S3)
    • Common peroneal nerve (L4-S2)

Nerve Supply of Individual Muscles

  • Iliopsoas: Femoral nerve (L1-L3)
  • Pectineus: Femoral nerve (L1-L3)
  • Adductor magnus: Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
  • Adductor longus: Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
  • Adductor brevis: Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
  • Gracilis: Obturator nerve (L2-L4)
  • Tibialis anterior: Deep peroneal nerve (L4-S1)
  • Extensor digitorum longus: Deep peroneal nerve (L4-S1)
  • Peroneus tertius: Deep peroneal nerve (L4-S1)
  • Gastrocnemius: Tibial nerve (S1-S2)
  • Soleus: Tibial nerve (S1-S2)
  • Tibialis posterior: Tibial nerve (L4-S1)
  • Flexor digitorum longus: Tibial nerve (S2-S3)
  • Flexor hallucis longus: Tibial nerve (S2-S3)

Note: The nerve supply of each muscle may have some variation in the level of innervation, but the above list provides a general outline.
