Study Notes
NBA Accreditation and OBE Framework
- The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) requires all engineering programs to attain Program Outcomes and demonstrate continuous improvement in performance since 2015.
- Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) offering UG and PG programs in engineering aim to get accredited by the NBA.
- The Draft National Education Policy (NEP) 2019 requires programs and institutions to be accredited by 2022.
Teaching-Learning Process
- All teaching and learning activities in HEIs should be planned to facilitate students to attain well-defined and measurable Outcomes (OBE).
- Engineering teachers should meet the requirements of NBA accreditation.
NATE Course Objectives
- This course enables teachers in engineering programs to facilitate their students to become good engineers and facilitates teachers to understand their role in getting their program accredited by the NBA.
Quality Loop
- The quality loop involves planning, doing, checking, and initiating action for improvement.
- If attainment lags behind the target, analyze the reasons and plan corrective actions.
- If achievement exceeds the target, raise the bar and set new targets.
Philosophy of Education
- To educate people wisely, we must know what we educate them to become.
- Educational philosophy involves applying formal philosophy to education.
- Philosophies of education include Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, Existentialism, and Analysis.
Higher Education
- Formal programs have aims, called Program Outcomes, which are identified by the concerned Accrediting agency.
- In professional courses like engineering, the Program Outcomes are identified with some freedom to add more given to the Department offering the program.
Teaching and Learning
- Teaching is the process of helping others to acquire knowledge, skills, and values.
- Teaching involves attending to people's needs, experiences, and feelings, and intervening so that they learn particular things.
NATE Course Structure
- The course consists of three modules: NBA and OBE Framework, Course Design, and Instruction and Accreditation.
- Each module constitutes one credit, with 20 units of half-hour video lectures, and weekly assignments.
Course Outcomes
- At the end of this course, learners should be able to understand the requirements of accreditation, Outcome Based Education, and write outcomes of a course in an engineering program.
- Learners should be able to design a course in an engineering program, design assessments aligned with course outcomes, and understand the facilities created beyond curricular requirements to enhance students' learning.
