    • Course Overview: Explores diverse musical traditions and practices in the Middle East, examining how music and sound reflect and shape social, political, and cultural landscapes. Investigates music's role in religious and secular contexts. Analyzes how music expresses identity, resistance, and authority. Information is presented through lectures, readings, audio-visual materials, and live performances.
    • Content Warning: The course covers sensitive topics related to politics, religion, and social issues in the Middle East. Some material may challenge personal beliefs or contain violent themes/images. Students should approach all content with an open mind and respect for diverse perspectives. Concerns should be addressed privately with the instructor.
    • Course Objectives: Connect course material with personal experiences and interests. Explore themes of tradition vs. modernity, politics, revolution, gender, and sexuality in performance.
