  • All muscles of facial expression are innovated by the facial nerve and supplied by the facial artery.
  • Located in the subcutaneous fascia.
  • Functions include:
    • Showing facial expressions and emotions
    • Speech
    • Mastication

Mouth Muscles

  • Orbicularis Oris:

    • Origin: anterior nasal spine & midline above chin.
    • Insertion: fibers in upper and lower lip
    • Nerve: facial, buccal branch
    • Blood supply: facial, maxillary and superficial temporal arteries.
    • Action: elevation/depression, protrusion/compression of the lips

  • Buccinator:

    • Origin: pterygoimandibular raphae and buccal alveolar bone

    • Compresses cheek against molars buccally.
