    Study Notes

    Overview of Muscle Tissue

    • Muscle tissue facilitates movement in the body and helps in the transport of materials internally.

    Types of Muscle Tissue

    • There are three main types of muscle tissue:
      • Smooth (visceral)
      • Cardiac
      • Skeletal

    Smooth (Visceral) Muscle Tissue

    • Composed of spindle-shaped cells.
    • Each cell contains one centrally located nucleus.
    • Primarily located in the walls of hollow organs, excluding the heart.
    • Functions involuntarily, meaning it operates without conscious control.

    Cardiac Muscle Tissue

    • Features short, cylindrical cells that may branch (bifurcated).
    • Contains one or two centrally located nuclei.
    • Identified by intercalated discs that link cells for coordinated contractions.
    • Displays striations, which are visible alternating light and dark bands.
    • Also involuntary, facilitating the heart's rhythmic contractions without conscious control.

    Skeletal Muscle Tissue

    • Consists of long, cylindrical cells that are multinucleated.
    • Nuclei are positioned at the periphery of the cells, not centrally located.
    • Exhibits striations similar to cardiac muscle tissue.
    • Under voluntary control, enabling intentional movement of the body.
