Study Notes
Motherboard Connectors
- 24-Pin Power Connector: Provides main motherboard power (3.3V ±5V, ±12V). Replaced the 20-pin connector. Some power supplies have a modular 24-pin connector with 20-pin base and 4 additional pins. Individual pins are keyed for correct orientation. Includes a locking mechanism.
CPU Power Connector (4-Pin ATX)
- Delivers 12V power specifically for the CPU. Located near the CPU. Identifiable with "CPU", "P4", or "ATX 12V" labeling. Also keyed for proper insertion.
SATA Connectors
- Used for connecting hard drives and SSDs. Colored connectors. Different layouts and colors are possible but all serve the same function.
- eSATA: External Serial ATA connection, either through a built-in interface or expansion card. Allows for external storage devices with similar speed/performance to internal storage devices.
Pin Headers
- Groups of pins at the edge of the motherboard. Connect to various components: power, USB, case buttons.
- Identified by labels (e.g., AAFP for external audio connectors). Varying types and functions across different locations
TPM, USB, and Fan Connectors
- Motherboard may contain:
- TPM (Trusted Platform Module) connector
- Legacy USB connectors
- USB 3.0 connectors
- Connectors for controlling cooling fans
Case Connectors
- Control buttons (power, reset): Connected to designated motherboard pins via connectors on the case. Connectors marked for precise placement.
- Hard drive activity and power lights: Connected to related pins on the motherboard.
M.2 Connector
- Newer motherboards feature M.2 connectors. Commonly used for SSDs for fast storage.
- Direct plug-in to the M.2 connector on the motherboard. Requires fastening the drive to the motherboard for secure connection.
