  • It allows more to be done with word processing projects.
  • When Word is opened, the Start Screen appears.
  • The start screen allows for creating new documents with pre-made templates.
  • You can create a document from a blank page or from a formatted template.
  • When typing in a blank document the program uses default margins and line spacing.
  • Margin defaults are 1-inch on the top, bottom, left, and right.
  • Line spacing is set to 1.08, and spacing after each paragraph is 8 points.
  • Word has tools and automatic features to make document creation easier.
  • Word utilizes nonprinting characters as symbols for formatting commands.
  • Nonprinting characters include symbols for paragraphs, indents, tabs, and spaces.
  • These symbols are helpful for editing but are hidden by default.
  • The Show/Hide button, in the Paragraph group of the Home tab, displays these symbols.
