Grooming Standards for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue

All Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Department personnel must maintain a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance.
Exceptions to the grooming policy due to health, safety, or personal welfare must be requested annually and authorized by the Fire Chief or designee.
The Fire Chief or designee is responsible for reviewing and updating the grooming policy.

Uniformed Personnel (Sworn) - Facial Hair

Mustaches must be neatly trimmed and not extend into the area where the SCBA facepiece touches the face.
Handlebar mustaches are allowed if they meet the same requirement as regular mustaches.
Lip beards must be centered on the bottom edge of the lip, no more than ½” in width and will not extend more than ½” downward. They also cannot extend into the area where the SCBA facepiece touches the face.
Sideburns must not extend below the lowest part of the ear and end with a trimmed clean-shaven line. They also cannot extend into the area where the SCBA facepiece touches the face.
Beards or goatees are not allowed unless authorized in writing by the Fire Chief with a physician's medical statement for documented medical conditions.
Beards or goatees are not allowed for personnel assigned to Operations.
The face must be clean-shaven, except for an acceptable mustache, lip beard, or sideburns.

Uniformed Personnel (Sworn) - Hair

Hair must be neat, clean, and well-groomed at all times and must not interfere with the performance of duty.
Unrestrained hair must not extend below the bottom of the uniform collar.

Mustaches must be neatly trimmed and will not extend ½” below or beyond the corners of the mouth.

Sideburns must not extend below the lowest part of the ear and end with a trimmed clean-shaven line providing a professional appearance.
Beards and goatees are permitted, provided they are neatly trimmed close to the face with no patches and do not exceed 1/8” in length (3mm). The beard must be trimmed above the neckline (Adam’s apple) in a clean line.
Other than the wearing of an acceptable mustache, lip beard, sideburns, beards, or goatees, the face must be clean-shaven when an individual’s workday begins and maintained throughout the work day.
