Study Notes

Medical Terminology

  • Medical terminology is the science of the proper use of medical terms.
  • Medical terms are usually composed of two or more components: the root, prefix, and suffix.

Medical Term Formation and Construction

  • Root: The main part of the word, often derived from Greek or Latin, describing a body part.

    • Example: Cysto (Bladder)
  • Prefix: Added before the root to modify it, providing additional information about location, number, or time.

    • Example: A (without) + symptomatic
  • Suffix: Added to the end of the root to describe a condition, disease process, or procedure.

    • Example: Appendicitis (inflammation of appendix)
  • Medical terms can be constructed in various ways, exemplified by:

    • Prefix, root, and suffix (e.g., Pericarditis)
    • Two roots and a suffix (e.g., Osteomyelitis)
    • Prefix and root (e.g., Dyspnea)
    • Root and suffix (e.g., Cystitis)
    • Prefix and suffix (e.g., Endoscopy)
  • Roots, prefixes, and suffixes can be used in combination to form various medical terms.

    • Multiple examples listed in the pages of the slides of different combinations to illustrate the concept.
