Medical Terminology (6) - Circulatory System
- The circulatory system comprises the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
- The heart is the organ that pumps blood.
- The heart is composed of right and left atria (single atrium) and right and left ventricles (single ventricle).
-
Atrioventricular valves:
- Tricuspid valve: three cusps, located on the right side of the heart.
- Bicuspid (mitral) valve: two cusps, located on the left side of the heart.
-
Semilunar valves:
- Pulmonary valve: controls blood flow to the lungs.
- Aortic valve: controls blood flow to the aorta.
-
Layers of the heart:
- Epicardium: outer layer.
- Myocardium: muscular middle layer.
- Endocardium: inner layer.
-
Blood vessels:
- Arteries: carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the body.
- Arterioles: small vessels connecting arteries to capillaries.
- Capillaries: smallest vessels where oxygenation and nutrient exchange occur.
- Veins: carry deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
- Venules: small vessels connecting capillaries to veins.

- Endocarditis: inflammation of the endocardium.
- Pericarditis: inflammation of the pericardium.
-
Diagnosis:
- Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG): measures the heart's electrical activity.
- Electrocardiography: noninvasive procedure to record electrical activity.
- Electrocardiograph: the record of the heart's electrical activity.
- Echocardiogram: record of the heart's sonogram.
- Echocardiography: use of sound waves to produce live images of the heart.
- Cardiac catheterization: a procedure where a catheter is moved through a blood vessel to the heart to diagnose heart disorders.
- Aortography: x-ray of the aorta using contrast dye.
- Arteriography: x-ray of the arteries using a radiopaque material.
- Angiocardiography: x-ray of the heart and great vessels using a dye.
