Thyroid Gland Structure
Thyroid Gland Structure
The thyroid gland consists of parenchyma (functional units) and stroma (support tissue).
Thyroid Follicles
Thyroid Follicles
Thyroid follicles are the structural and functional units of the thyroid, lined with epithelium.
Follicular Cells
Follicular Cells
Follicular cells are simple cuboidal epithelial cells that line thyroid follicles and produce thyroglobulin.

Study Notes
Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands: Overview
- The presentation covers the thyroid and parathyroid glands, highlighting important information for MED437 Histology.
- Important details are marked in red, while information relevant to male/female slides is in black. Additional notes are shown in gray.
Objectives
- Describe the histological structure of the thyroid gland.
- Identify and correlate different endocrine cells in the thyroid gland and their functions.
- Describe the microscopic structure of the parathyroid gland.
- Describe the functional structure of the parathyroid cells.
Thyroid Gland: Parenchyma and Stroma
- Parenchyma: The structural and functional units of the thyroid gland, consisting of thyroid follicles.
- Follicles: Simple cuboidal epithelium (a) follicular cells, (b) parafollicular cells, and a central colloid-filled lumen.
- Colloid: A gel-like material within the follicles.
- Basal Lamina: A thin layer surrounding each follicle.
- Stroma: The connective tissue surrounding the follicles.
- Capsule: A dense irregular collagenous connective tissue layer.
- Septa: Interlobular septa, extending into the gland.
- Reticular Fibers: Thin connective tissue with rich capillary plexuses, providing blood supply.
Thyroid Gland: Cells
- Follicular Cells (Principal Cells):
- Simple cuboidal cells
- Prominent nuclei with prominent cytoplasm
- Facilitate thyroglobulin synthesis and thyroid hormone synthesis.
- Parafollicular Cells (C-cells):
- Located between the follicular cells
- Pale-staining (clear cells)
- Larger than follicular cells
- Secrete calcitonin (a hormone involved in calcium regulation).
Parathyroid Glands: Parenchyma and Stroma
- Parenchyma: Formed by cords or clusters of epithelial cells (chief cells and oxyphil cells), with blood capillaries in between. Reticular fibers surround these cells.
- Chief Cells: Eosinophilic, rich in rER, responsible for parathyroid hormone secretion.
- Oxyphil Cells: Larger than chief cells, have abundant mitochondria.
- Stroma: Gland capsule, thin septa, reticular C.T., and often includes adipose tissue.
Additional Information
- The total number of parathyroid glands is four.
- They are located on the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland.
- The presentation includes various questions about the histology of thyroid and parathyroid glands. (e.g. What is the epithelium of thyroid follicles, what are the cells responsible for making T4 and T3, what histological structures are not in parathyroid glands etc)
