Introduction

• Maintenance is one of three key technical functions in industry, alongside product development and production.
• Maintenance strives for close collaboration with other company departments.
• Figure 2-1 visually represents the interaction of a maintenance department with other departments within a company. This interaction is crucial for the technical function of maintenance.
• Maintenance technicians interact with various departments, highlighting its integrated role within the company.

Maintenance's Role Within a Company Structure

• Effective maintenance performance is significantly influenced by its placement within the company's overall structure
• The company structure allows for greater cooperation among functions, better technical support, and increased management interest in maintenance's operation.
• Traditionally, maintenance is seen as a subordinate function to production (Figure 2-2).
• A more modern approach positions maintenance as a key partner in equipment management (Figure 2-3).

Company Organizational Chart Analysis

• Company organizational charts (organigrammes) visually represent the roles and responsibilities within an enterprise .
• An organizational chart clarifies the tasks and interaction of each department as well as delineating the roles of various personnel.
• The chart shows the structure and relationship between different departments.
• A universal organizational chart that meets all situations doesn't exist as every company will have specific needs and peculiarities.
• A generic organizational chart with five primary functions (Figure 2-4) is provided as a helpful and general standard for reference.
• A good internal structure for the maintenance department allows for efficient performance.
• The structure needs to be tailored to the needs, size and goals of the company.

Maintenance Department Functions

• Maintenance methodologies, scheduling, and execution should be well organized within a department for efficient performance.
• A standard four-function organization is suggested (Figure 2-6).
• Methods: Define the techniques and means of maintenance.
• Scheduling: Coordinates the timing of maintenance tasks.
• Execution: Carries out the planned maintenance tasks.
• Administration: Manages resources and processes.
• Planning, ordering, and executing work are also part of the maintenance process (III-3-1-3)
• Each task needs to be properly managed (III-3-1-4).
• Management encompasses equipment, personnel, and stock (III-3-4-1, III-3-4-2).
• Equipment, Materials, and tools are broken down into various categories (III-3-4-2), including intervention tools, individual and collective tools, special tools, and heavy machinery.
• Stock management, maintenance personnel, and budget management (III-3-4-3, III-3-4-4) are all important elements of a comprehensive maintenance function. Maintaining good records for all items is key.
