Lymphatic System Functions
Third Function: Transportation
- The lymphatic system helps transport fats (fatty acids) from the small intestine to the bloodstream.
- Fatty acids are absorbed by cells in the small intestine, packaged into chylomicrons, and then released into the lymphatic vessels.
- Chylomicrons are too large to diffuse into capillaries, so they enter lymphatic vessels (lacteals) in the small intestine.
- The lymphatic system transports chylomicrons to the bloodstream, where they can circulate and provide energy to the body.
Additional Transportation
- The lymphatic system also transports other substances that don't originate from the blood, such as proteins (hormones) and waste products.
- These substances may have trouble entering capillaries, so the lymphatic system provides an alternative route into the blood circulation.
- Examples of such substances include hormones that need to reach target tissues and waste products that require processing in the liver or excretion by the kidneys.
Review of Lymphatic System Functions
- The first function of the lymphatic system is to collect excess fluid from tissues and return it to the bloodstream.
- The second function is to support the immune system by transporting pathogens to lymph nodes, where immune cells can respond to infections.
- The third function, discussed in this video, is to transport substances that don't originate from the blood into the bloodstream via the lymphatic vessels.
