Study Notes

Long Term Memory (LTM)

  • Long-term memory is a continuous storage of information with no limit, similar to a computer's hard drive.
  • It has two components: explicit and implicit memory.

LTM: Explicit Memory

  • Explicit memory refers to the conscious recall of facts and events.
  • It includes impersonal facts and everyday knowledge.
  • There are two types of explicit memories:
    • Semantic memories: knowledge about words, concepts, and language (e.g., knowing who the President is).
    • Episodic memories: information about personally experienced events, linked with specific times and places (e.g., remembering your 5th birthday party).

LTM: Implicit Memory

  • Implicit memory is not part of our conscious awareness.
  • It has two types:
    • Emotional memory: formed through behaviors, not part of our consciousness.
    • Procedural memory: stores information about how to do things, such as skills and actions (e.g., how to ride a bike, tie your shoe laces, drive).
