Local Area Networks (LANs) and VLANs
- LANs are groups of devices within the same broadcast domain.
- Switches segment networks into broadcast domains.
- Using separate switches for different broadcast domains can be inefficient. This leads to extra costs, both financially from the extra devices, and from the extra management required.
- VLANs (Virtual LANs) logically segment a single physical switch into multiple broadcast domains. This eliminates the need for separate physical switches, reducing costs.
- VLANs achieve the same functionality as separate switches, but using a single switch.
- VLANs are configured by associating ports on the switch with a specific VLAN number (e.g., red network = VLAN 1, blue network = VLAN 2).
- Devices connected to a specific port belong to the corresponding VLAN, preventing direct communication across VLANs.
- VLANs improve network management and lower overall costs.
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
- VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are used for secure communication across public networks (e.g., the internet).
