Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) - Introduction
- LNG is a form of natural gas that is cooled to a liquid state, significantly reducing its volume
- This allows for easier transportation and storage
- Extracted natural gas might contain impurities like hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water.
- Natural gas liquids, such as propane and butane, are also extracted and sold separately.
- In liquefaction plants, purified natural gas is chilled to -162 degrees Celsius, reducing its volume by approximately 600 times.
- LNG is a clear, colorless, and non-toxic liquid stored in large cryogenic tanks until loaded onto tankers.
LNG Value Chain
- Upstream: Natural gas is extracted from reservoirs and transported via pipelines (gathering system) to processing facilities to remove impurities.
- Midstream: LNG is pumped from storage tanks into specially designed double-hulled tankers for global shipment. Tanker capacities vary, ranging from 3.0 to 3.7 Billion Cubic Feet (BCF) of NG, or 62,000 to 77,000 metric tonnes of LNG. One tanker can usually support the daily natural gas needs of a country like Spain.
- Downstream: LNG is transferred to a regasification plant to convert it back to a gaseous state for delivery to natural gas pipelines. A distinctive odor can be added to the gas for safety. LNG can also be delivered to remote areas via smaller containers on trucks, barges, or rail cars. Delivery occurs through large diameter transmission pipelines to local distribution networks for delivery to consumers, businesses, and power plants.
