Guidelines for Supporting Survivors of Gender-Based Violence

  • Understand: validate, support, and empower survivors
  • Disclosing is a process, and survivors may:
    • Contradict themselves
    • Minimize their experience
    • Not remember details
    • Be in emotional crisis or seemingly detached
    • Experience bodily symptoms

Types of Trauma

  • Simple trauma: resulted from an unexpected and overwhelming event
  • Complex trauma: resulted from ongoing traumatic experiences
  • Developmental trauma: resulted from early ongoing experiences, affecting attachment and development
  • Intergenerational trauma: resulted from living with or being parented by a survivor of trauma
  • Vicarious trauma: indirect exposure to trauma through firsthand accounts or repeated secondhand exposure
  • Systemic trauma: environments, institutions, and systems causing oppression, marginalization, and harm

Hyperarousal and Hypoarousal

  • Hyperarousal: feeling anxious, angry, out of control, or overwhelmed; body's "fight or flight" response
  • Hypoarousal: feeling spacey, zoned out, numb, or frozen; body's "shut down" response

Grounding Techniques

  • Help survivors calm and regulate their nervous system
  • Techniques: planting feet firmly, deep breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 exercise
  • Sometimes, people don't want to do grounding techniques; in that case, maintain your own regulation and speak in a calm voice

Validating Experiences

  • Respond empathetically, supportively, and validatingly
  • Reflect the language used by the survivor to describe their experience
  • Listen without interrupting, avoid victim-blaming, and tell them they are believed and not at fault
  • Recognize your own reactions and control your facial expressions

Empowering Survivors

  • Give back as many choices as possible
  • Put the survivor in the driver's seat to decide what happens next
