Levels of Assistance Definitions

  • Independent: Patient can safely perform the activity without any help.
  • Supervision: Patient is mostly capable, but helper should remain close to intervene if necessary.
  • Stand by Assist/Close Guarding: There's a moderate likelihood of the patient needing help, requiring the helper to be nearby without direct contact.
  • Contact Guard Assist: High chance that the patient will need assistance; helper should maintain contact but provide help only when necessary, indicative of a high fall risk.
  • Minimal Assistance: Patient performs the majority (over 75%) of the task and requires no more than 25% help through physical cues from the therapist.
  • Moderate Assistance: Patient can partly perform the task but does not achieve more than 50% independently.
  • Maximal Assistance: Patient relies on the therapist for assistance in at least 75% of the activity.
