- Colonists resented the economic restrictions and tax burdens imposed by the European colonial powers

Colonial Empires
- At the start of the 19th century, Latin America was under the control of the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires
- The Spanish empire stretched from present-day western USA and Mexico to Argentina

War of Independence
- The armed struggle began in the Spanish colonies to control their own affairs

Factions in the Spanish Empire

Post-Independence Movement
- The leaders worked to accomplish self-government for white elite settlers
- Some leaders advocated for the abolition of slavery and other social changes
- Mestizos, native Latin Americans, and people of color were involved in the struggle on both sides
- The South American war of independence was marked by two significant military campaigns:
- The North Latin American campaign, led by Simon Bolivar, aimed to free Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia
- The South Latin American campaign, led by José de San Martín, aimed to free Argentina, Chile, and Peru.
Venezuela and New Granada
- The struggle for independence in Venezuela began before the Napoleonic Wars
- In 1806 Francisco de Miranda attempted to liberate Venezuela but failed.
- In 1810, the first republic of Venezuela was declared in Caracas
- Simon Bolíver fought in the North and was pivotal in winning independence for Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia
- By 1815, Venezuela had become a royal colony again
Simon Bolivar
- Bolivar took refuge in New Granada and continued to fight against the royalists
- In 1815, Bolivar's army entered Caracas
- Bolivar succeeded in establishing the republic of Venezuela
Argentina and Chile
- The independence struggle was led by José de San Martín in the South of Southern America
- San Martín first liberated Chile (in 1817) before planning to liberate his nation
- In 1820 San Martín's army was sent to Peru
- In 1821, Peru gained independence
Paraguay
- It was a landlocked area in the north of Argentina
- Argentina sent troops to support Paraguay but was defeated
- In 1811 Paraguay declared its independence
- José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia became dictator
- He ruled the country without any interaction with the outside world from 1816 to 1840
Uruguay
- It was under Spanish rule
- Jose Gervasio Artigas led the independence movement, forming an army
- In 1814 Artigas drove out Spaniards from Montevideo
- In 1816 a war broke out with Brazil, which captured Montevideo resulting in the failure of the independence movement led by Artigas (1820)
- In 1828, Uruguay's independence was supported by Argentina and Brazil
Mexico
- There was opposition to the Spanish rule in Mexico as well
- In the early 1800s, priests like Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started organizing revolts
- Miguel Hidalgo organized a revolt in 1810 and demanded equality, social equality, racial equality, and independence for Mexico
- Jose Maria Morelos replaced Hidalgo during the rebellion
- Morelos led successful campaigns against Spanish rule in parts of Mexico
- In 1820, royalists appointed Agustín de Iturbide, a Creole, to defeat the remaining guerrillas, but Iturbide agreed with Vicente Guerrero to fight for the independence of Mexico, which was proclaimed in 1821, and in 1823 the republic of Mexico was established
Central America
- During the colonial period in the region, most of Central America was part of Guatemala
- Gabino Ganiza declared independence for Central America in 1821
- In 1823, Central America combined to form a federation known as the United Provinces of Central America. It included Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua
- The aim was to decrease Guatemala's influence in Central America
- Civil war broke out in 1826, and the economy deteriorated
- The region broke into independent republics in 1831
The Caribbean
- The Spanish colony of Santo Domingo (later the Dominican Republic), Cuba, and Puerto Rico were some of the Caribbean Islands
- Santo Domingo gained independence before the end of the 19th century
- Cuba and Puerto Rico gained independence around 1898
Haiti
- Haiti was the second western hemisphere nation to gain independence
- The independence movement began in 1804 with the slaves revolting against white slave owners
- The Haitian independence movement's success inspired Bolivar and others
Brazil
