Digital Media Ownership and Distribution
- All digital media recordings are Department property.
- Unauthorized copying or reproduction of media is prohibited, except for designated Digital Technology Section personnel.
- Non-evidentiary video must be retained for 180 days; pre-check videos for 30 days.
- Internal requests for copies of digital media are permitted as outlined in Annex D.
Digital Media Recording Equipment Guidelines
- Members are accountable for maintaining Department-owned recording equipment.
- In-car and body-worn cameras automatically activate under certain conditions (e.g., overhead lights, sirens).
- Officers must ensure digital media uploads daily by parking vehicles within range of Wi-Fi access.
- Protocols are established for reporting lost or stolen camera equipment.
Recording Custodial Interrogations
- Detectives are mandated to record custodial interrogations in compliance with state law.
- Recordings can be made with or without a suspect's consent.
- Specific exemptions apply (e.g., public safety exigencies, equipment failure).
- Records must be preserved with the case file and shared with the Prosecutor’s Office when required.
