Kandyan Kingdom Establishment
- Established in late 15th century around Senkadagala, central Sri Lanka hills
- Maintained Sri Lanka's independence until 1815, resisting European encroachment (Portuguese, Dutch, English) from the 16th century onward.
- Strategically located for defense; natural protection from the Mahaweli River, Udawaththa and Hanthana mountain ranges, and difficult mountain passes (Balana, Hunnasgiriya) providing access.
- Initially under Kotte Kingdom's administration, but revolted under Jothiya Situ, later freed by Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu.
Early Kandyan Kings
- Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu: First king of the Kandyan kingdom
- Jayaweera Bandara: Succeeded Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu; Kotte kingdom divided into Kotte, Seethawaka, and Raigama during his reign.
- Karalliyadde Bandara: Jayaweera Bandara's son; befriended Portuguese to counter Seethawaka kingdom threat.
- Faced opposition from Kandy's elite for aligning with the Portuguese.
Conflict and Portuguese Influence
- Weerasundara Bandara, a powerful Kandyan elite, supported rival Seethawaka King Rajasinghe I to take over Kandy.
- Karalliyadde Bandara lost the battle of Kandy around 1580, fleeing to Mannar, seeking Portuguese protection with daughter Kusumasana Devi (Dona Catherina) and nephew Yamasinha Bandara (Don Phillip)
