Study Notes
Javelin System
- M98A2 Javelin: A man-portable, medium-range anti-tank weapon system.
- Command Launch Unit (CLU): The reusable portion of the Javelin. Features day/night sights, gunner controls, indicators, and built-in testing.
- M98A2 Javelin round: Comprised of a Launch Tube Assembly (LTA), Battery Cooling Unit (BCU), and the missile. Capable of defeating modern and future armor, with a maximum range of 2,500 meters.
Saber System
- M41A7 Saber: A mobile, heavy-precision anti-tank system. Includes a launch tube, Target Acquisition Subsystem (TAS), Traversing Unit (TU), tripod, Fire Control Subsystem (FCS), Lithium Power Source (LPS), and Position Attitude Determination Subsystem (PADS).
- PADS: Requires a minimum of 4 satellites for self-position and 5 for enemy location. Provides grid coordinates for weapon and target positions.
- Seeker Trigger: Initiates the missile's seeker mode after track adjustments.
- Round Interface Connector: Connects the system for digital information and seeker signals.
- NVS NOT COOL: A CLU display indicator, lighting when the night vision sight isn't at operating temperature.
- Attack Mode: CLU indicator showing missile path to the target, with top attack as default and direct attack for user selection.
- FTL capability: Using PADS from TAS, offers 60-meter CEP at 6000 meters.
- Aided Target Tracking: Improves missile tracking, increasing hit and kill percentages (PH & PK).
- TU elevation brake: Improves Saber stability during launch.
- Hot Position: A well-covered firing position behind backblast. One is available for each weapon.
- Cold Position: A well-covered, defendable position.
General Anti-Armor Considerations
- Fire Patterns: Techniques for distributing fire on multiple targets.
- Active Protection: Systems that emit (jammers, radar, etc.) to protect from enemy fire.
- Passive Protection: Armor that doesn't react when hit (cages, nets, spaced plating).
- Reactive Protection: Explosive and non-explosive protection.
- Target Precedence: Deciding which enemy threat to engage first based on priority.
- Primary Position: A main firing position for a specific mission.
- Ambush Concept: Guides the positioning of anti-armor weapons.
- Categories of Anti-Armor Weapons: Light, medium, and heavy.
- HAW MAW LAW: A concept involving heavy, medium, light anti-armor weapons firing at maximum range.
- Mass Surprise Fires (MSF): Simultaneous engagements with all anti-armor weapons.
- Specific Weapon Ranges: Various maximum ranges for different anti-armor weapon types (Javelin, MAAWS, TOW, etc.) are listed.
- Anti-Armor Weapon Positions: "Hot Positions" and "Cold Positions" are detailed for safe and well-covered weapon placement.
- Initial Engagement Methods: "On order" and "event oriented."
- Enemy Threat Levels: "Most dangerous", "dangerous", "least dangerous."
- Weapon Position Types: "Alternative" and "supplementary" positions for different mission tasks.
- ATGM Advantages & Disadvantages: Detailed advantages like high hit rate and broad platform use and disadvantages such as vulnerability, slow speed, and limited range.
- Weapon Comparisons: Multiple weapon types (LAV-25, LAAW, MG, RW, FW, Arty) and their strengths, and weaknesses are compared.
Display Indicators
- CLU Sights: Day, wide-field, narrow-field, and seeker FOV.
- Seeker Mode: Located on the right side of the display.
- "SEEK": Appears after missile activation and CLU is in seeker mode.
- "MSL CONN": Indicates proper connection between CLU and missile without seeker activation.
- "Missile Not Ready": Lights while the missile cools after seeker activation.
