Study Notes
Javelin System
- M98A2 Javelin: Man-portable, medium-range anti-tank weapon system. Consists of the Command Launch Unit (CLU) and the round.
- Command Launch Unit (CLU): Reusable part of Javelin. Includes day/night sights, gunner controls, display indicators, and built-in testing.
- M98A2 Javelin Round: Composed of the Launch Tube Assembly (LTA), Battery Cooling Unit (BCU), and the missile. Capable of defeating current and projected armor; maximum range is 2,500 meters.
Saber System
- M41A7 Saber: Man-portable, heavy anti-tank system. Includes the launch tube, Target Acquisition Subsystem (TAS), Traversing Unit (TU), tripod, Fire Control Subsystem (FCS), Lithium Power Source (LPS), and Position Attitude Determination Subsystem (PADS).
- PADS: Requires at least 4 satellites for its own position and 5 for enemy position, providing grid coordinates. Target acquisition accuracy is 60m Circular Error Probable (CEP) at 6,000 meters.
- Seeker Trigger: Initiates the missile's seeker mode.
- Round Interface Connector: Provides an electrical connection for information and seeker image signals.
- NVS NOT COOL: Indicator on the CLU display that signals when the Night Vision Sight (NVS) isn't at operating temperature.
- Attack Mode: Indicator on the CLU showing missile path. Top attack is default; direct attack is user selectable.
General Anti-Armor Concepts
- Fire Patterns: Standard methods for distributing anti-armor fire across multiple targets.
- Active Protection: Systems that actively try to protect, like jammers, radar, or fragmentation.
- Passive Protection: Armor that doesn't react upon impact, like cages, nets, or spaced armor plates.
- Reactive Protection: Explosive or non-explosive measures placed within armor.
- Target Precedence: Deciding which enemy target to engage first based on threat.
- Primary/Supplementary Positions: Main firing position vs. secondary positions with different missions.
- Ambush Concept: Guidance for anti-armor weapon positioning.
- Categories of Anti-Armor Weapons: Light, medium, and heavy.
- HAW MAW LAW: Concept of light, medium, and heavy anti-armor weapons firing at maximum range.
- Mass Surprise Fires (MSF): Coordinated engagement of enemy forces using all anti-armor weapons.
Weapon Specific Parameters (Ranges, Modes, and Considerations):
- M98A2 Javelin: Max range 2500m. Minimum direct attack range 65 meters. Minimum top attack range of 150 meters.
- M41A7 Saber: Various components and features with specific functions and uses. Includes Fire Control Subsystem (FCS). Key aspects include launch tube and wire clearance, friendly locations, backblast, standoff considerations, minimum engagement range, system check out, and water considerations.
- TOW2B Aero: Max range of 4200m, min range of 200m.
- Various TOW models: Different sub-types with features like the precursor charge and aerodynamic ogive.
- BGM-71 series: Range, types of warheads and capabilities of various TOW variants
- LAV-25: Tow capable with 25mm cannon's penetration capabilities
- LAAW: Considerations including penetration capability, portability, exposure time, and armor penetration.
- MGs & RW: Capabilities against various targets and importance of factors like angle of attack, tracking time, and time on station.
- FWs and Arty: Specific considerations when using these types of weapons.
Display Indicators
- CLU Sights: Optics provide different field of views (FOV) and magnifications.
- Seeker Mode: Indicates missile is now being guided by the seeker, illuminated by the "Seeker" light
- "MSL CONN": Indicates a stable CLU/missile connection
- "Missile Not Ready": Shows that the missile is still in a cooling down phase
- "Seek": Indicator appearing after missile activation and the CLU is in Seeker mode
Engagement Considerations
- Position Considerations: Hot positions (good fields of fire, withstand backblast), and Cold positions (maximum cover).
- Firing Considerations: Critical aspects of targeting (standoff, flank shots, minimum engagement range).
Types of Fire
- Front Fire Least effective against targets facing the gunner,
- Cross Fire Effective against targets facing the gunner, requiring good communication.
- Depth Fire Effective against targets in depth—targeting outer units first, moving toward the center.
- Kill Window Fire Employing this type of fire when targets move between covered areas.
Enemy Threat Levels
- Most Dangerous Enemy Engaging, or preparing to engage, friendlies.
- Dangerous Enemy Capable of engaging friendlies.
- Least Dangerous Enemy Cannot, or is not powerful enough to engage, friendlies.
