Antiquity: The Indus Valley and Buddhist Era

By the seventh century CE, Kashmir had emerged as a kingdom. The Loharas, Utpalas, and Karkotas were among the earliest rulers. Hinduism took root during this time, and the region's culture flourished, producing a rich body of literature and the arts.

Muslim Conquests and the Mughals

In the 14th century, Muslim rulers expanded their influence across the region, and over the next three centuries, various Muslim dynasties, including the Chaks and the Sikandars, ruled Jammu & Kashmir. The Mughal Empire, with the reign of Emperor Akbar, brought stability to the region. During this time, Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, began to take root in J&K.

The Sikh Empire and the Afghan Invasions

In the 18th century, the Sikh Empire briefly annexed J&K, but in 1819, Afghan invaders captured the region. The Sikhs reclaimed the area only to lose it again to the Dogras, another Hindu dynasty, in 1846.

British Rule and the Partition of India

British India's colonial rule began in 1846, but it wasn't until the mid-20th century that J&K became a political hotspot. Following India's and Pakistan's independence in 1947, the region witnessed invasion and multiple wars over its sovereignty. India gained control over the region, but the issue of Kashmir's status remains a contentious political issue between India and Pakistan to this day.

The Kashmir conflict is a long-standing political dispute between India, Pakistan, and Jammu & Kashmir over the region's sovereignty. The conflict largely stems from the events following India's and Pakistan's independence, when the region was partitioned. Since then, multiple wars and ceasefires have led to a complex political situation, with India and Pakistan both claiming the region and each controlling part of it.
