Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's Early Life

  • Born in a Ghoti Hindu Brahmin family to Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and Bhagavati Devi in Birsingha village, Paschim Medinipur District, on 26 September 1820
  • Family originally hailed from Banamalipur, Hooghly district
  • Moved to Calcutta at the age of 9 and lived in Bhagabat Charan's house in Burrabazar

Education

  • Studied at Sanskrit College, Calcutta for 12 years and graduated in 1841
  • Qualified in Sanskrit Grammar, Literature, Dialectics, Vedanta, Smriti, and Astronomy
  • Cleared Sanskrit law examination in 1839

Career

  • Joined Fort William College as head of the Sanskrit department in 1841
  • Became 'Assistant Secretary' at Sanskrit College in 1846
  • Recommended changes to the existing education system, resulting in an altercation with College Secretary Rasomoy Dutta
  • Resigned from Sanskrit College in 1849 and rejoined Fort William College as a head clerk
