    Study Notes

    IoT Architecture

    • Defines how IoT elements (devices, networks, sensors, applications) interact.
    • Consists of layers and components performing various functions, from physical devices to data processing applications and storage.

    Four-Layer IoT Architecture (Figure 1)

    • A visual representation showing the four layers of the architecture. (Note: The image itself is not provided in the notes).

    Three-Layer IoT Architecture

    • Perception Layer: Includes objects/factors to be detected (e.g., humans, cars, temperature, humidity); comprises sensors, embedded systems, RFID tags, and readers.
    • Network Layer: Processes data from the Perception Layer; transmits data to the Application Layer via various network technologies (3G, 4G, 5G, WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, infrared); handles large data volumes.
    • Middleware Layer: Crucial for storing and processing massive amounts of data.
    • Application Layer: Top layer; delivers applications to users; enables smart object functionality; applications cater to various industry segments (manufacturing, logistics, retail, etc.).

Physical and Logical Designs of IoT

    • IoT involves physically connected devices (node devices) embedded with sensors, software, and technologies for data exchange.
    • Digital systems record, monitor, and adjust interactions between connected things.

    Physical Design of IoT

    • Focuses on individual devices, their connections, and protocols for a functional IoT environment.
    • Devices perform remote sensing, actuating, monitoring, etc., and transmit information via wired/wireless connections.
    • Data generated is used for analysis and system improvement.

    Physical Design: Node Devices ("Things")

    • Unique identities; build connections, process data, provide interfaces & storage.
    • Generate data for analysis and system improvement.
    • Components include: Connectivity (USB, Ethernet), Processors (CPU), Audio/Video Interfaces (HDMI, RCA), Input/Output Interfaces (UART, SPI, CAN), and Storage Interfaces (SD, MMC, SDIO).
