Study Notes
- Autoimmune diseases are abnormal conditions where self-cells are attacked by autoantibodies or autoreactive cells
- Immune system normally eliminates auto-reactive lymphocytes during development, but this process fails in autoimmune diseases
- Attack can be humoral (by auto-antibodies) or cellular (by auto-reactive T cells)
- Can be specific to a tissue or systemic, depending on the self-antigen targeted
- Prevalence: 5-7% of adults are affected, with two thirds being women. Over 80 human diseases have autoimmune origins.
