- It is communication between persons who have different cultural beliefs, values, or ways of behaving.
Features of Intercultural Communication
- Knowledge about other cultures is key to effective intercultural communication.
- Ways to learn about other cultures include talking to members of the culture, viewing videos or films that present a realistic view of the culture, and reading about the culture.
- Open-mindedness involves being willing to consider other people's ideas, suggestions, and opinions.
- It also involves social decentering, which is seeing the world from the other person’s point of view.
- Being mindful is being aware of how people communicate with others and acknowledging that other people are different from us.
- Tolerance means understanding and accepting the differences between cultures and avoiding negative setbacks of miscommunication and stereotyping.

Social Categorisation

Age

Race & Ethnicity

Religion
- Religion is a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices.

Social Class
- Social class refers to the status and influence people are perceived to have based on economic factors, education, and family history.
- Class differences can be communicated through the way we dress, the cars we drive, the homes we live in, and the schools we attend.
Stereotyping
- Stereotypes are overgeneralised, oversimplified, and over-exaggerated information.
- Stereotypes are resistant to change and can become more solidified as we age.
Discrimination
- Discrimination is the unfair or inappropriate treatment of categories of people based on their race, sex, age, gender, ethnicity, or other group memberships.
