    Intelligent Agents

    • An agent is anything that perceives its environment through sensors and acts upon it through actuators.
    • A percept is the content of an agent's sensors.
    • A percept sequence is the agent's complete history of everything it has perceived.
    • An agent's choice of action at any given instant can depend on its built-in knowledge, the entire percept sequence observed up to that point, but not on anything it hasn't perceived.
    • An agent's behavior is described by an agent function that maps any given percept sequence to an action.
    • An agent program implements the agent function.
    • An agent architecture is the physical computing device that runs the program with sensors and actuators.
    • Agent = Architecture + Program

    Rationality

    • Rationality at any moment depends on:
      • Performance measure (success criterion)

    Environment Properties

      • Episodic: agent's experience is divided into atomic episodes (e.g., each episode is independent from the others; one choice/action).
      • Sequential: current decision affects all future decisions (e.g., a game of chess).
    • 5. Static vs. Dynamic:
      • Static: environment doesn't change while the agent is deliberating.
      • Dynamic: environment changes during deliberation.
    • 6. Discrete vs. Continuous:
      • Discrete: a finite set of possible states and actions.
      • Continuous: infinite number of possible states and actions
    • 7. Known vs. Unknown:
      • Known: outcomes or outcome probabilities are known.
      • Unknown: agent needs to learn how the environment works.

    Agent Programs (Structures)

    • Simple Reflex Agents:
      • Agents select actions based solely on the current percept.
      • They ignore the rest of the percept history.
    • Model-based Reflex Agents:
      • Maintain some internal state to reflect aspects of the environment that are not present in the current percept. Maintain a model of how the world evolves.
      • Use a "transition model" (how the world changes), and a "sensor model" (how the world state reflects in agent's perceptions). A key function is "UPDATE-STATE".
    • Goal-based Agents:
      • Track current world state and a set of goals.
      • Choose actions that will lead to achieving goals.
    • Utility-based Agents:
      • Track world state, and use a "utility function" to measure preferences among states.
      • Choose actions to maximize expected utility.

    Learning Agents

    • Any type of agent can be a learning agent (or not).
    • Learning allows agents to operate in initially unknown environments and become more competent than their initial knowledge alone might allow. Learning agents have a "performance element" program to select actions and a "learning element" to improve performance.
    • A "critic" provides feedback on agent performance to the learning element. A "problem generator" suggests actions to gather new, informative experiences.

    Agent Representation

    • Atomic: No internal structure; each state is indivisible.
    • Factored: States broken into variables with values.
    • Structured: Representations like relational databases, representing objects and relationships.
